An award-winning Scottish Futures Trust reference project, the Lairdsland Primary School informs the design and role of primary school projects in Scotland. It saw the embodiment of the Scottish Government’s Curriculum for Excellence through the provision of high quality, flexible teaching spaces whilst simultaneously delivering value for money and exceeding sustainability targets.

Working closely with Walters & Cohen Architects, BakerHicks provided building services and BREEAM services for the project. Key services included:

Energy Efficient

Running alongside the Forth and Clyde canal, which is an ancient monument, the two-storey linear building provides a learning environment that stimulates the four capacities the Curriculum for Excellence is designed to foster. Working closely with the architects and wider design team, our engineers designed a layout that provides ease of access and accommodates the flexibility required to incorporate a variety of spaces, including formal learning areas, project based learning, small group, display, presentation and specialist spaces, and outdoor learning as well as areas for sports and socialising. The large school hall is located so as to allow it to be used after school hours without allowing access to the remainder of the school, encouraging wider community engagement without risking the security of the pupils and school.

With value for money being a key requirement, sustainability and energy efficient solutions formed a key element of the design. Our engineers designed passive energy efficient solutions which maximised the natural opportunities and considerably reduced the school’s carbon emissions. This included, under floor heating, solar power, 90% natural lighting, natural ventilation and a biomass boiler. The school was designed with the BREEAM assessment at the centre of the project. We worked closely with all project partners, encouraging regular interaction throughout, resulting in an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating alongside the EPC rating of B+.

The project was a huge success and has been the catalyst for many other school designs, with the reference design principles used to create scalable and adaptable designs that belong in their surroundings.
